John R. Shannon was born and reared in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He is the son of the late John H. Shannon and Maddie L. Shannon. He attended the public school system in Pasquotank County and graduated from Northeastern High School. Rev. Shannon served four years in the United States Navy and was honorable discharged four year later. He received an A.A.S. in Business Administration Technology College of the Albemarle; Certificate in Continuing Education in Religion from Roanoke Collegiate Institute under the late Dr. L. Warren Chase. Rev. Shannon received a Certificate In Music,the degrees Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Theology from Roanoke Theological Seminary under Dr. John E. Trotman and Mr. Leonard Ballou. He completed a six week Christian Teacher Training Program at Shaw University Divinity School Raleigh, NC under Dean J. T. Robeson and Dr. Rudolph Tripp May 2004.
Rev. Shannon is the Senior pastor of Providence Missionary Baptist Church.He is a member of the Executive Board of the Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association under the leadership of Dr. William M. Sawyer. Rev. Shannon is presently serving his second term as Moderator of the Middle Ground Union which consist of 33 churches. Rev. Shannon is the Dean of Shaw University Divinity School@Roanoke Elizabeth City, NC and President of the Edenton Chowan Christian Fellowship Union.
Rev. Shannon is a community minded person and a strong supporter of the Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association. His first pastorate was at New Haven Missionary Baptist Church Hertford, NC were he served faithfully for eight years. Rev. Shannon was called to Providence Missionary Baptist Church Edenton in April 2005 and God's blessing are continuing to be manifested in his ministry.
He is the father of three children Bobby, Cherry, and John. Rev. Shannon has fourteen grandchildren whom he is very proud of.
